 NAACP ACT-SO

ACT-SO OVERVIEW:

The Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological, and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) is a major youth outreach project of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). It was founded in 1978 by the renowned author and journalist, Vernon Jarrett. ACT-SO was designed to be a year-long enrichment program that provides role models, encouragement, and guidance for the student whose skills and talents may go undeveloped or overlooked. ACT-SO builds self-esteem and develops a sense of self-worth within African-American students by challenging their ability to succeed in a competitive and technical environment.

ACT-SO conducts an annual academic competition for students in grades 9-12 . covering four (4) academic disciplines: Humanities; Sciences; Visual Arts and Performing Arts. In keeping with the original Olympic tradition, the winners are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals. Although it is great to win, the competition and awards are secondary. What is most important is the improved climate for academic excellence that declares war on the low expectations and low scholastic achievements that destroys an individual’s hope of a bright future. ACT-SO will always be firmly rooted on the foundation.
