 NAACP ACT-SO



LOCAL HISTORY: In January 1992, the Okaloosa County Branch of the NAACP initiated the first and only ACT-SO program in Northwest Florida.

1992 ACT-SO Events: 

  • 43 students registered, 22 students competed 
  • 12 students selected to compete in 13 categories at the National Competition 
  • Gold Medal winners received 1 stock in Bankers Trust (USA, 8th largest bank) 
  • National Competition held in Nashville, Tennessee 
  • Keynote speaker/youth motivator was the Rev. Jessie Jackson 
  • Over 1,800 students entered the National Competition from 750 cities 
  • Micheal Grady, Jr. ranked in the top 10 in the Chemistry category and was offered the opportunity to apply for a $20,000 Scholarship at Renselear Polytechnical University

1993 ACT-SO Events: 

  • 44 students registered, 18 students competed 
  • 11 students selected to compete in 12 categories at the National Competition 
  • Gold Medal winners received 1 stock in Bankers Trust (USA, 8th largest bank) 
  • National Competition held in Indianapolis, Indiana 
  • Keynote speaker/youth motivator was Nelson Mandela 
  • Over 2,000 students entered the National Competition from 900 cities 
  • Student from Choctawhatchee High School, Shairmarco Jackson, made a brief appearance on the National ACT-SO program aired on ABC Television Network 
  • Certificate of Recognition, Okaloosa County School District

1994 ACT-SO Events: 

  • 57 students registered, 39 students competed 
  • 13 students selected to compete in 14 categories at the National Competition 
  • 4 students were invited to support and observe the National team 
  • 8 additional students attended, paying their own expenses 
  • Gold Medal winners received 1 stock in Bankers Trust (USA, 8th largest bank) 
  • National Competition held in Chicago, Illinois 
  • Keynote speaker/youth motivator was Mae Jemison, first black female astronaut 
  • Over 2,100 students entered the National Competition from 1,005 cities 
  • First national winner, Cory Robinson from Choctawhatchee High School, won a Silver Medal in Dramatics and awarded a full scholarship in Drama to attend OWCC 
  • Recipient of the Okaloosa County Branch Presidential Service Award

1995 ACT-SO Events: 

  • 64 students registered, 40 students competed 
  • 13 students selected to compete in 13 categories at the National Competition 
  • 14 students were invited to support and observe the National team
  • National Competition held in Minneapolis, MN 
  • Keynote speaker/youth motivators were Merle Evers-Williams and Kwiese Mfume 
  • Over 2,200 students entered the National Competition from 1,005 cities 
  • Seniors, Tamica Johnson and Fliery Robinson, Jr. were awarded scholarships in Drama by OWCC 
  • Program nominated for Florida’s Attorney General Bob Butterworth Crime Prevention Award 
  • Recipient of the Okaloosa County Branch Presidential Service Award

1996 ACT-SO Events: 

  • 61 students registered, 41 students competed 
  • 14 students selected to compete in 15 categories at the National Competition 
  • 16 students were invited to support and observe the National team 
  • National Competition held in Charlotte, NC 
  • Ms. Rhonda K. Wilson, newly appointed National ACT-SO Director 
  • Keynote speaker/youth motivators were Merlie Evers-Williams, Kwiese Mfume, Rev. Jamal H. Bryant, Director of Youth and College Division 
  • Seniors, Mahreon Johnson, Erin Jacobs, Kenisha Rhodes and Keisa McRae were awarded full scholarships to OWCC 
  • ACT-SO students Lequanda Boldin, Tierney Hinch, April Atkins and Jonathan Pryor performed a special tribute to Mrs. Rosa Parks on her 40th Year Anniversary Tour celebrating the Montgomery Bus Boycott 
  • 1995 ACT-SO Events advanced the Chapter’s receipt of the National NAACP Thalheimer ‘s Award 
  • Program nominated for Florida’s Attorney General Bob Butterworth Crime Prevention Award 
  • Recipient of the Okaloosa County Branch Presidential Service Award 
  • Announced partnership with OWCC to provide eight (8) full scholarships to ACT-SO participants
